Now here's something to buzz about. The Bees Matter initiative has designated this week, June 5-12, as National Planting Week across Canada. The goal? To help honey bees thrive by providing them sources of nutrition.
As Canada's national canola grower association, we know how important honey bees are; canola and bees have a very sweet relationship. Flowering canola provides bees with food, and in turn the honey bee's pollination can have a positive impact on canola production.
With this in mind, we'll be supporting National Planting Week from start to finish, and want to encourage you to get involved too.
How can you get involved in National Planting Week?
This week, take some time to plant your own garden with bee-friendly plants.
The health of honey bees is impacted by multiple factors, and one of these is access to nutritious food sources. The more bee-friendly plants we can grow, the more honey bees will thrive.
You can do this by getting a
free
Buzzing Gardens seed kit.
Through its Buzzing Gardens program, Bees Matter is providing seed kits free of charge! These kits include a variety of flowering plants native to Canada and recommended by Pollinator Partnership Canada, and include enough seeds to plant a five-square foot garden.
This year is the third year Bees Matter has been giving away Buzzing Gardens kits. In the first two years, they provided seeds to almost 70,000 gardens. This year, your participation in National Planting Week can help them reach their goal of 100,000 kits.
