Biofuels.
Powering our future.
Fuelling farm success.

In Canada, canola-based biofuels can power our future and fuel your farm success. Good for your farm. Good for rural communities. Good for the future.

Canadian canola is finding a home in biofuel markets around the world including Canada, the United States, and the European Union.

This growing demand is strengthening prices, creating more market opportunities for farmers, driving investment and jobs in rural communities, and reducing emissions from the transportation industry.

A future built on what we already grow.

BY THE NUMBERS

Demand for canola oil is climbing – fast.

Driven by federal and provincial biofuel policies and global mandates, Canadian canola oil demand has more than tripled in less than a decade – creating new markets, jobs, and revenue streams for farmers.

Good for Your Farm

$27/t

Stronger prices and real returns. Canada’s current Clean Fuel Regulations is estimated to add nearly $600 million in farmgate value for canola in 2025/26. That’s $27 per tonne or $0.62 per bushel for the 2025/26 crop year – meaning more money in farmers’ pockets.

Better basis

Proximity to crushers means better prices. Data shows that crusher basis levels are consistently at a premium over elevator bids. Meaning, crushers are drawing in more farmer deliveries due to higher demand, often resulting in better prices for farmers.

2.5Mt

Diversifying markets for your crop. Expanded canola crush capacity is supplying canola oil to new biofuel facilities in Canada, diversifying and growing domestic markets for canola and derisking farmers’ exposure to export market volatility. For example, one biofuel facility producing 1 billion litres annually, can use up to 2.5 million metric tonnes of canola seed equivalent, a volume rivalling Canada's top seed export markets.

Good for Rural Communities

$2B+

More investment in your communities. Over $2 billion in new and expanded canola processing has been announced since 2021, bringing jobs and economic activity to rural Canada.

75%

More value added at home. Growing domestic demand for biofuel feedstock like canola oil is driving crush capacity expansion across the Prairies. By 2026, up to 75% of the canola crop could be processed in Canada, adding more value in local communities.

1,150

Jobs in rural communities and regional centres. Since 2022, new crush capacity is adding 150 direct jobs to the Prairies and over 1,000 indirect jobs across Canada.

Good for the Future

Now

Real emissions reductions today. Biofuels are one of the most immediate ways to cut transportation emissions with no changes to engines or fuel systems.

90%

Canola leading the way. Canola-based biofuels can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel.

$1.1B

Growing our economy. Canola-based biofuel production is an important emerging contributor to the Canadian economy, rising from $70 million in 2012/13 to $1.1 billion in 2022/23.

Canadian farmers are powering the future.

Canadian canola farmers take pride in the quality of the crop they grow and how canola is helping to fuel Canada’s energy future.
